George Moreno, an uncelebrated star of the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, is program coordinator for the Illinois Backstretch Charitable Foundation, the benevolent arm of the ITHA.

He has served as ITHA office manager for nearly a decade, managing a range of vital tasks from administrative finances to IT concerns, and directing ITHA members and backstretch workers to necessary resources. His knowledge, skill and acumen help ensure the smooth operation of the ITHA and its subsidiaries, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues, association members and other racing stakeholders.

“One of the big lessons to be learned from horse racing is the value of patience,” he says. “We can’t give up simply because matters become difficult. I try to carry this mentality into every endeavor.”

George brings his exemplary work ethic and commitment to his role as IBCF program coordinator, helping to improve the lives of backstretch workers and their families. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Illinois Chicago and took the lead in forming the IBCF as a 501(c)(3) to enable the organization to apply for grants to bolster its mission.

He is spearheading initiatives aimed at expanding the foundation’s reach and impact within the community, helping to manage the IBCF’s scholarship program, and coordinating backstretch social and educational activities — particularly for younger children residing on the backstretch. He understands intuitively the needs and aspirations of individuals living and working on the backstretch. Above all, he is a tremendous advocate for the ITHA and our members, the greater backstretch community, and the sport and industry of Illinois thoroughbred horse racing.

David McCaffrey, the ITHA executive director, observes: “George positively affects the lives of hundreds of trainers, owners and backstretch workers. He keeps our operation in sync and plays an integral role in every facet of our mission.”
